Color

The timber species that you use will determine the color of the timber floor. Like what our Almighty Savior said, everybody is unique. He did not only refer to humans but to trees also. No two trees are the same. Each has their own color variations that make it stand out from other trees. Hence, trying to find an exact color match is highly impossible. The color of timber naturally changes color as it ages, most especially when exposed to direct sunlight. It is advised that you do not leave your curtains open for a great period of time to minimize color change.

Grade

Timber is graded on the amount of natural markings present in the wood such as gum vein, tight knots and etc. Generally, there are four grades for different types of wood flooring. There is Select Grade which has only minimum amount of features, and then Medium Features which offer medium amount of markings. While High Feature Grade provides high concentration of features, Parquet Clear Grade is usually clear of markings. Timber grades may vary from one company to another since most of them would grade their timber according to their standards. Timber grades are important to what atmosphere your home would exude. Higher graded timber often has consistent clear appearances which are perfect for a sleek and modern feel while lower timber grades are suited for an old world charm environment.

Board Width

The timber used whether it is for groove, tongue or engineered flooring offers a range of board widths a homeowner can choose from according to the wood species of their choice.

Hardness

The hardness of a timber product determines its natural ability to resist impact. The higher the hardness level of timber, the more durable it is to indentation and abrasion and vice versa.

Top Nail or Secret Nail

When you opt for timber flooring, you are given two nail profiles, one is top nail boards and the other is secret nail boards. When you choose to go with top nail boards, nails will be installed through the top surface of the board. For secret nail boards which have cleaner finish results, the nails are installed through the tongue of the board.

Feel

The feel of the floor can depend on the type of board and sub-floor supporting system you use. The floor would have a firmer feel if they are glued directly to concrete, laid over plywood or any similar sub-floor. During dry weather, noises such as squeaks are commonly heard due to the loosening of the joints of the board.

Homeowners should keep in mind these timber flooring characteristics and not only think about timber flooring costs. A higher priced timber floor does not necessarily mean quality floors. It is best that you follow guidelines in choosing a timber floor for your home.
