Cruella (2021) Fashion Explained

Cruella is a 2021 Disney movie that reimagines the history of 101 Dalmatians main villain Cruella De Vil, turning her into a budding fashion designer growing up during the 1970s London fashion scene. The movie tried to tap into traditional cinema tropes about the fashion industry, young ingenue has talent, gains favor with established fashion designer, and then decides to get revenge when wronged. I won’t say the movie plot nor costumes were revolutionary, but they were a pretty interesting walk through 20th century British fashion history, which I personally loved. Cruella is meant to represent punk aesthetics, alla Vivienne Westwood, while her nemesis the Baroness Von Hellman represents the fashion establishment, like Christian Dior & Chanel. The movie is full of references to Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen, Charles James, John Galliano, Thierry Mugler and more but does that make it a good fashion film?
